Thomastown’s second half comeback fell agonisingly short in Northern Football League division 2 at the weekend.
But in the end it didn’t matter, with the Bears snatching fourth place, and a finals berth, on percentage.
It was a virtual elimination final as the Bears and Diamond Creek faced off for the last spot in the top four.
In the end, it was just two points between the teams.
Diamond Creek led by 39 points at half-time and looked to be heading to an easy win.
The Bears though had other ideas and reduced the margin to 23 points at three-quarter time.
The Bears kicked 5.6 in the final quarter to Diamond Creek’s 2.3.
At the final siren, the Bears fell agonisingly short, losing 14.14 (98) – 13.18 (96).
The Bears and Diamond Creek finished equal on 44 points, but the Bears percentage was 1.33 better, securing the last spot in the finals.
The Bears will face Banyule in a knockout semi-final. Eltham will play Lower Plenty in the other semi-final.
Epping finished its season with a 15.15 (105) – 6.3 (39) loss to Eltham.
The Pingers finished sixth with six wins.
