Having already qualified for finals, everything else is a bonus for Bundoora in the Northern Football League women’s division 3 competition.
In just their first season, the Bulls have exceeded all expectations and sit atop the ladder and undefeated with two rounds remaining.
Bulls president Bill Price said it was a massive effort.
“It’s very good, given 50 per cent of the team has never played before,” he said. “They’ve improved out of sight.
“It was an unknown at the start of the year, as we didn’t even know if we would get a side up. They’re been improving every week.”
Price said the players were excited with their results and how far they had come.
He praised the efforts of the coaches.
“The senior players have taken training and Gary Moorcroft has taken on the coaching role and been able to help teach them the basics.
“The group has bonded well together and training really hard.”
Price said he didn’t think many women’s sides would have a coach with the playing experience of Moorcroft, who was part of Essendon’s 2000 premiership side.
Moorcroft’s daughter, Chloe, Moorcroft is in the team.
Price said the stand-outs for the side had been Sianne Clancy, who plays in the backline, Bridgette Taylor-Gray, who was part of the league’s interleague team, and Rainbow Ebert, who has had an impact in the midfield.
The Bulls had the weekend off, with La Trobe University having to forfeit due to a lack of numbers.
With two rounds left, the Bulls are two games clear of second-placed St Mary’s.
Price said that while the Bulls knew they would go into finals as favourites, they weren’t taking anything for granted.
“Making finals is a bonus,” he said. “It’ a whole new ball game now.
“They’re going to keep training and work towards a possible premiership.
“A premiership in the inaugural year of the side would be a great success and would go down in history.”
In other results, Mernda lost to VU Western Spurs 4.8 (32)-0.1 (1).
In division 2, La Trobe University defeated Laurimar, while South Morang lost to West Preston Lakeside 9.19 (73)-3.0 (18).
