A budding reporter’s story about her great-grandfather has won her a national journalism award.
Year 7 Thomas Carr College student Asheriya won the intermediate section of the Australian Young Catholics Journalist Competition.
The theme for this year’s competition was the journey of a family.
Asheriya said she was proud to have won the award. She is undecided about which career path she will choose but said writing is definitely on the cards.
Teacher Mary Udovicic congratulated Asheriya on her achievement.
“Asheriya’s reflection on her Great Aawa [great-grandfather] was full of courage, resilience and hope,” Ms Udovicic said.
“Before writing the reflection, Asheriya interviewed many family members to gain a rich insight into her Great Aawa’s life.
“It was a true family collaboration … This is why I immediately felt joy for them all.”
Ms Udovicic said she encourages students to “extend beyond the classroom setting”.
“It is important for students to see how the skills they learn in the classroom can be used in other settings,” she said.
“Having courage to share their ideas with the wider community is crucial in our world.
“Taking part in competitions pushes students to think about the content from a big picture perspective.”
