A western suburbs club that provides athletes with intellectual disabilities opportunities for competition close to home is looking to expand.

The Melbourne West Special Olympics Club, which currently runs sessions in Footscray, Maribyrnong and Avondale Heights, is eyeing expansion into Brimbank, Melton, Wyndham and Hobsons Bay.

The club provides weekly training and regular competition for people with intellectual disabilities in sports such as swimming, athletics, basketball, tennis and tenpin
bowling.

The group recently began offering bocce competitions at the Cub Italia Sporting Club in St Albans as part of its expansion across the west.

Melbourne West Special Olympics Club chairman Gavin Dovey said the club aimed to make sports accessible and enjoyable for people with intellectual disabilities.

The club’s bocce sessions are held on Wednesday nights.
