As Werribee Racing Club enters its second year of partnership with a leading international racing and breeding farm – reflected in the racecourse’s name change to Spendthrift Australia Park Werribee – new general manager Adam Wilkinson says there are plenty of exciting times ahead.
“We have a real desire to be one of the leading sports and entertainment providers in the region,” Adam declares. “Partnering with Spendthrift Australia has meant we’ve had the opportunity to further grow our brand, both on and off the track. It’s exciting.”
So, what’s on in the coming season? Eight race meetings are scheduled, with a focus on a relaxed family-friendly atmosphere – starting with the TAB Werribee Cup and culminating in the Community Clubs Day on April 24. In between are four weekend and two Friday meetings.
TAB Werribee Cup – Sunday, December 8
“This year’s Werribee Cup promises to be even bigger and better,” Adam says. “And we are very pleased to have racing.com’s Kate Watts as our ambassador again.
“It will be a great day for the local community to come out to the races to celebrate during the lead-up to Christmas. It’s a real family day, with kids’ activities and live music.
“The always-popular Fashions on the Field will be a big attraction as always, and the day gives one of the few chances through the year for all racegoers, young and old, to dress up and make a day of it.
“And the Park Hotel Marquee Village will prove the perfect spot to get together with friends and work colleagues for a day at the races.”
Christmas Eve Meeting
This is a popular annual event, this year falling on a Tuesday. Proceeds will, as always, support the local CFA, with firetrucks at the track for kids to see before Santa arrives with his cheer.
IRT International Breakfast with the Stars – Wednesday, October 30
This feature event, outside club race meetings, is a champagne breakfast and offers the final chance to see the international horses as they prepare for the Melbourne Cup. “We are close to being able to announce a former International superstar jockey as our guest speaker, among many other great names of racing – including Racing Victoria chief executive Giles Thompson,” Adam explains.
“This breakfast will form part of the Lexus Melbourne Cup tour, with the Melbourne Cup trophy in attendance.
“Racing Victoria’s Chief Handicapper Greg Carpenter and International Scout Paul Bloodworth will be at the breakfast to preview all the Melbourne Cup runners.”
