From the cherry type to deliciously juicy heirlooms, tomatoes are a universal favourite.

And now is the perfect time for green thumbs and garden tragics to get involved in Melton council’s Tomato Project.

The project celebrates all things tomato – from growing to preserving to eating.

Residents are being encouraged to pick up a Tomato Project postcard and free tomato seeds from their local neighbourhood house, community centre or the Melton and Caroline Springs civic centres.

“Where our food comes from, how we prepare it and who we share meals with has a huge impact on our health, our community and our planet,” according to the council website.

“We hope that once people have discovered how delicious homegrown tomatoes taste and how cheap and easy they are to grow, they will be inspired to prepare more fresh food and expand their home vegie patch or pots.”
