One of Sarah Nourish’s favourite things to do is to bake a birthday cake, knowing she can make someone’s special day even more special.

The 25-year-old Melton woman has always loved baking and has fond memories of baking with her mum to create tasty treats.

After leaving school at 17, Ms Nourish last year decided the time was right to get back to what she loved the most.

She enrolled in Kangan Institute’s certificate III in retail baking and this month represented the institute at the Baking Association of Australia’s Geelong Baking Show.

Coming third in the gateau category, Ms Nourish impressed the judges with her three-layer orange buttercream cake topped with candied oranges.

“I felt pretty good about my cake, but didn’t think I’d get third place,” Ms Nourish says. “My teacher at Kangan’s favourite combination is chocolate and orange, so I thought I’d do it for him.”

Ms Nourish has hit the ground running with her baking adventure, already starting her own business, with plans to expand it.

She says she wants to get a food van in the next year, baking and selling her goods at markets.

“Baking is just my stress-reliever,” she says. “If anything’s going on, I know I can bake and it just makes me really happy.”
