The start to life in Big V state championship division has been good for the Sunbury Jets’ women.

The Jets, in their first season in the top division, opened the season with two strong wins at the weekend.

On Saturday night, they led at every break against Southern Peninsula Sharks, but didn’t have it all their own way in the 75-61 win.

The Jets lead at the main break was three points, despite losing the second quarter. The Jets extended the lead in the last two quarters to seal the win.

Courtney Duever picked up where she left off last season, scoring 21 points and having 10 rebounds.

Josie Stockill, Orla O’Reilly and Chelsea Burns also scored double figures.

On Sunday, the Jets unveiled their division 1 championship flag in their first home game of the season, against McKinnon.

The Jets were relentless at both ends of the courts.

The Jets started strongly and led by 11 points at quarter-time. They then scored the first 14 points of the second quarter to lead by as much as 27 points in the second quarter.

The second half was much the same, with the Jets restricting the Cougars to less than 10 points in the third quarter.

Even with the Jets’ bench getting big minutes in the second half, the lead continued to increase.

The Jets eventually won 96-41.

All Jets players got at least seven minutes on the court, with everyone hitting the scoreboard.

As in the previous night, four of the five starters finished with double figure points.

This time it was Duever (21), Monique Stevens (10), Stockill (13) and O’Rielly (18) who did the damage.

The reigning division 1 defensive player of the year, Burns was back doing what she does best with five steals. The Cougars had eight for the game between them.

With the Jets the only team to play multiple matches at the weekend, they are on top of the ladder after the first round.

The Jets will play last season’s grand finalists, the Ringwood Hawks, on Sunday at Boardman Stadium.

The Jets’ youth league girls side had a 56-40 win against Mornington Breakers. Chloe Angove top scored with 14 points and had 16 rebounds.
