An exploding electricity transformer has cut power to 2500 homes across the inner-west and badly damaged a car.

The transformer, located between Martin and Shorten Reserves on Blandford Street in West Footscray, exploded about 11am on Thursday morning, cutting power across Maidstone, West Footscray, Kingsville and Yarraville.

Jemena spokesman Michael Pintabona said investigations are still underway into the cause of the explosion, but initial suspicions are that the transformer was vandalised.

He said power was slowly being restored across the area and most homes had power again by soon after 1pm.

Resident Jess Mooijman said her car was parked below the exploding transformer and is now covered in burn marks.

She said she was a little shaken by the incident and the MFB has taken a report.

Mr Pintabona said Jemena was aware of the damage and would be working with Ms Mooijman on repairing her car.
