Police from across the west will lace up their footy boots this weekend in a friendly Aussie rules match to celebrate NAIDOC Week.

A Victoria Police and an Indigenous team will battle it out for bragging rights and the annual William Cooper Cup at Footscray’s Whitten Oval this Sunday.

Festivities kick off from 11am with a cleansing ceremony by the Western Suburbs Indigenous Gathering Place Association, with the game starting at midday.

Held in July, NAIDOC Week celebrates Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander history, culture and achievements.

Senior Sergeant Tim Jacobs said the annual match, which has been running for at least 14 years, is an integral part of NAIDOC Week celebrations in the west.

“We’re building building relationships between ourselves and the Indigenous community,” he said.
