Virgin Mary Mosque in Hoppers Crossing will open its doors to the public this Sunday.
The mosque will take part in the second annual Victorian Mosque Open Day which aims to show the rich diversity of the Muslim community.
The open day is being co-ordinated by the Islamic Council of Victoria (ICV) and supported by the Victorian Multicultural Commission and the state government’s Office of Multicultural Affairs and Social Cohesion.
The main objectives of the open day include creating awareness of Islam and Muslims, breaking down stereotypes surrounding the Muslim community and to encourage communication and mingling between non-Muslims and Muslims.
ICV president Mohamed Mohideen said the project was also aimed at strengthening community spirit.
“Last year, we met people who had never been inside a mosque, others who lived across the road from one and always wondered what it was like inside,” he said.
The open day will include food, mosque tours, question-and-answer opportunities and short talks by local religious elders and young people. There will also be jumping castles, rides, face-painting and other activities for children.
The event will run from 10am-4pm on Sunday at the Virgin Mary Mosque, 143 Hogans Road, Hoppers Crossing. Details: wicentre.org.au
