A Point Cook photographer has been recognised as one of the best in the world.

Leah Robinson, who specialises in family and children’s photography, was named among the top 10 best children’s photographers in the world by US website Top Teny.

“I was on the list with the likes of Russian photographer Elena Shumilova and Magdalena Berny from Poland,” she said. “These are women whose work I have always been inspired by.”

Robinson took up photography in 2010 after having her second child.

“I was a bit obsessed with taking pictures of her constantly,” she said. “Then my husband bought me my first digital SLR, and I became obsessed with light, composition and all that sort of thing. I’d stay up all night reading photography forums.”

A nurse by trade, Robinson decided to turn her hobby into a career and has reaped the rewards.

“The Werribee River is my favourite place to take photos,” she said. “It’s close and it’s beautiful. My dad always painted landscapes, and this, coupled with me growing up on land, meant environmental portraiture made complete sense to me.”

Robinson said photographing families and children was a great love.

“Capturing strong emotional connections is paramount to me in my work, and is what I strive for, whether it is between a family or a child and my lens,” she said.

“Introduce beautiful light and gorgeous surroundings, and I’m in heaven.”
