A group of Melton Mormons will take part in a worldwide digital project that collates photos and information about graves.

Some 20 young parishioners from Melton’s Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints will trek the municipality over the next three weeks in search of as many headstones as they can locate to photograph then upload the images onto the Billion Graves’ mobile phone app and website.

Church member David Cowan said the app can help people all around the world to collect information on their family trees.

“It’s particularly good because you don’t have to travel around the world to find the grave of a family member,” Mr Cowan said.

“Being able to collect the records and do your family history is really important because it helps identify where we came from, who we are … and it helps us get a better understanding of our families.”

To get involved, call Mr Cowan on 0424 125 690, or download information and photos directly to billiongraves.com.

Billion Graves is partners with companies including FamilySearch, MyHeritage and Findmypast, and whatever is downloaded to its website is copied to partner sites.
