School children and their families will be among the many Sunbury and Macedon Ranges residents digging in at various national Tree Day events this weekend.

Planet Ark is encouraging Australians to join local efforts as part of the nation’s biggest nature-care initiatives. Schools Tree Day is this Friday (July 29), while National Tree Day is Sunday (July 31).

Animal welfare movement Edgar’s Mission will host a plant-out from 10.30am until 3pm on Sunday at 81 Bridies Lane, Lancefield.

On the same day, at the Campaspe River (end of Langley Street) in Kyneton, the Campaspe River and Land Management Group will be tree-planting from 9.30am until 12.30pm.

National Tree Day manager Debbie Agnew says honouring National Tree Day through community work, school or just in the backyard is a great way to connect with the world.

Last year almost 300,000 people took part at more than 3500 sites around the nation, planting more than 1.2 million trees, shrubs and edibles, and helping to improve green urban areas.
