June 23, 1976

Sunshine mayor Ian Mill has been accused of misleading the council. The charge was made during a stormy council meeting. At one stage Cr Mill was accused of seeking to turn Sunshine into a “banana republic farce”.

The ALP investigation into the Calwell federal electorate has zeroed in on alleged “numerous irregularities” at the Westvale branch in St Albans. The Party sub-committee has found no irregularities in the other eight branches that make up their electorate.

A concerted effort by local MPs from both sides of politics could finally secure electric train services to Sydenham, Sunbury or Gisborne, according to George Seitz, state Labor MP for Keilor. Mr Seitz will next week sponsor a public meeting to campaign for regular suburban rail services to be extended beyond St Albans.

The death of a woman killed while crossing Furlong Road has infuriated residents whose five-year battle for a safe crossing has been ignored. Veisinaia Vaii, 37, and her 11-year-old daughter, Hola, were on their way to pick up a friend – whose car had broken down in the Sunshine Hospital car park – about 7.50pm last Wednesday when they were hit by a car.
