40 years ago

August 11, 1976

In a surprise nomination on Monday, former licensee of Werribee Swimming Pool, Mr John Hendriks, turned the Central Riding into a four-way contest. For several weeks three candidates had made their intentions known and a fourth contestant was completely unexpected. In the other four ridings all sitting councillors were re-elected unopposed.

August 13, 1986

Teenage sex in cars, vandalism, under-age drinking and offensive behaviour from gangs of youths have sent a wave of terror and disgust through shopkeepers and residents in Vincent Cres, Werribee. In the past year, youths have run amok at the once quiet group of shops and left behind them a trail of destruction and despair. One of the shopkeepers is so worried that he allows youth into his shop to take goods so they will leave him alone.

August 14, 1996

Werribee Cup Day revellers face an alcohol ban at the October 30 meeting … the first time in the Werribee Racing Club’s history that patrons will not be able to take a drink to the course. The 117-year-old club is the last in Victoria to introduce alcohol bans. Racegoers will only be able to buy alcohol from the race course bars. They will be limited to two cans at a time.

Movie-goers left grappling with a real-life drama say Werribee 10 Cinema management was slow to react after a fire started in a neighbouring restaurant, filling the cinema with smoke. The fire was believed to have started in the flue of a pizza oven at La Porchetta restaurant about 12.40pm last Thursday. About 150 people were evacuated.
