Werribee has gained a valuable first leg in for the title of Premier Town, with the announcement of sectional winners. The prize for Beautification and Conservation was awarded to Werribee for special efforts to involve the whole community in tree-planting programs and the creation of a clean and attractive city.

July 9, 1986

Harold Llewellyn Baden Powell – the father of Hoppers Crossing and a legend in his own time in Werribee Shire – has died. Mr Powell succumbed to cancer on July 1 after a 12-year struggle with the same illness that took his wife almost nine years ago. Mr Powell, 81, died at home surrounded by his family. That’s the way he wanted it.

Police are seeking three men who brutally bashed a 15-year-old Werribee girl at Laverton railway station last Friday night. The girl’s wrist and nose were broken and she suffered severe bruising in the attack, which happened about 10.30pm. Senior detective Max Schiavon, of Werribee CIB, described the incident as callous and unprovoked.

A doctor at the Werribee Mercy Hospital has supported statements made in an anonymous letter to the

Banner last week accusing the hospital of a cover-up in its emergency department. The doctor, who did not write the letter and spoke on condition of anonymity, has worked at the hospital’s emergency department for a number of years.
